How Hard Should You Try

Posted in Uncategorized on December 29, 2008 by evershedgolf

You’re trying too hard

I wish I could find someone who could teach me how to try just hard enough. Personally I believe a great deal of why we do not succeed at the level we believe we should has more to do with our lack of knowledge about what we are doing than simply  we are not focusing or we’re trying too hard.

One of the first things I tell any junior player  is, if what you are working on is not working, stop and ask yourself – what is it I do not yet understand? I guarantee you, you are closer to the truth with that question than you are thinking you haven’t practiced enough, or even worse, thinking you not good enough.

I find no good reason why this advice wouldn’t work for an adult, but juniors seem to listen better. You can’t out work this game, but you can out smart it with an organized game plan.

If we realized what we are.

Posted in Uncategorized on December 19, 2008 by evershedgolf

If we would realize what we are, we might then have a chance to change.

Several years ago I bought a series of tapes on weight loss. Actually it was part of a series of self help understandings called cybervision which included golf. The weight loss tapes have haunted me to this day. The teachings on the tapes were different than I had ever heard before. They talked about us having a set point and that our brain gets worried anytime that the set point is tampered with. Simply put, if you have weighed 200 pounds for 10 years, your brain will fight like hell to keep you there. It doesn’t mind so much that you get above it but anytime you get below it, it the brain thinks you’re starving and will send unbelievably abstract thoughts to your conscious thinking of reasons why you need to go to the fridge to eat. All you out there that have tried to lose weight know what I am talking about.

I get a kick out of all these nutritionists telling us what to eat, like we don’t know in general what we should and shouldn’t shove into our mouths. The more important riddle to be solved is why we do it.

In the game of golf we all want to believe that if we are scoring higher than we want to it must be because our swings are not good enough yet. It would be wise to start to look into the possibility that what really needs to happen is how to lower our set point.

Hope you will continue to login , we will be doing much more on this worthy subject.

Tiger, the best ever?

Posted in Uncategorized on December 16, 2008 by evershedgolf

It would be so easy to just give it to him,  on the surface absolutely, this coming from a huge Jack Nicklaus fan.

However, the times are so different now, the money, the equipment, the all exempt rule. I truly believe all things being equal – Tiger, Jack, Arnie, Ben, Byron and Bobby J. – would rise to the top week after week. Who would be the best? Let’s call it a draw.

Is someone going to come along better than Tiger? Yes for sure. There is still plenty of room for improvement in ball striking; the best still don’t train as smart as they could. Now if Tiger stays focused and keeps healthy it may take a while before this happens. I might also add that the youth will strike the ball better, but it may be questionable if they can score better. Tiger really is remarkable. It is so rare that someone comes along with his athletic ability, guts, fortitude, short game, physical presence, etc…

Everyone else has noticeable weaknesses, maybe Tiger’s is his Driver, but he’s so damn good with everything else it doesn’t seem to matter. I think I once heard him say he wanted to lead the tour in both driving distance and accuracy, I don’t think he was kidding. I don’t believe anyone else on any of the tours could or would even begin to believe this to be thinkable.

We are very fortunate to be able to watch this guy perform.

Velocitors

Posted in Uncategorized on December 13, 2008 by evershedgolf

There are 4 main velocitors in the golf swing:

  • #1 The cocking and leveling of the left wrist.
  • #2 The thrusting of the right arm.
  • #3 The rotation of the left forearm.
  • #4  The ability to keep the left arm connected to the left side.

The two biggest reasons this information is of value to you :

  • If you want the ball to go far it’s nice to know where the gas pedal is.
  • If you don’t want the ball to go far it’s nice to know where the brake is.

Where’s The End Of Out

When they say to swing inside out, where is the end of out?

The truth:  It’s an inside to out impact with an inside follow through.

The Magic Motion

Posted in Uncategorized on December 6, 2008 by evershedgolf

At times I become frustrated trying to communicate this game, the frustration comes from two factors:

#1 The English language does not have in it, the ability to impress upon a point that is vital.

#2 You and I have been so saturated with unsubstantiated promises that we have become numb.

My frustration comes from my understanding of how important this game is to many people.  I do have some pieces of information that would truly change how you would perceive the golf motion.  However, because of all those that have misled, my words get lost.  I could keep fretting over it or I could just keep doing my thing and hope that enough of you like it to make my time spent figuring how to deliver it to you worth while.

There is a little motion that is supposed to happen about 6 inches before the ball that to date, I have never heard explained in a way that the golfing masses would possibly recognize should happen. Without super slow motion footage the human eye cannot see it and even with that footage you would have to know what you’re looking for. The move has been alluded to, but at the same time you have received contradictory information.

Hint: You must stop thinking that the club face opens and closes; this picture will seldom and sometimes never allow the golfer to truly strike the ball beautifully.  Instead, you must start to understand what a square club face means and how the club should stay squared throughout the entire motion.

Tell me honestly; if I gave you the answer for free, would you recognize it as the truth or would you question why someone that has the truth would want to give it away. Let me tell you… I am not giving it to you, you have to earn it.  If you were a lawyer would you not charge me?  If you were a doctor would you give it to me?  Would a plumber fix my pipes for free?  I look forward to helping you improve your game.  Keep logging in.

The secret is on my on line academy, you won’t recognize it, instead your game will just magically get better!

Check Out all material on impact, pay attention to how I don’t talk about the club face opening and closing.

No Such Thing

Posted in Uncategorized on December 6, 2008 by evershedgolf

There is no such thing as an open or a closed stance.

This open stance, closed stance  thing has screwed golfers up for centuries. What there is, is an open alignment or closed alignment, there is a big difference.

Because of poorly taught golf lessons the golfing world is still stuck on thinking that the open and/or closed stance has something to do with your foot line. What have your feet got to do with anything? The club follows the line of your shoulders not your feet,  humans are quite capable of having our feet going 80 yards right of the target and still hitting a great big slice because our shoulder line is 40 yards left of the target.

Therefore what is needed is an understanding. I say all shots should be hit from a squared stance. A squared stance is when the shoulders, hips, and thighs are all pointed in the same direction. I don’t care where you aim your feet all they do is give you a place to put your golf shoes. Now if you decide that you want to hit a fade, take that squared stance and aim it slightly left of the target line; or if you want to hit a draw take that squared stance and aim it slightly right of the target line. Now this is all assuming you have a good golf swing.

Get Your Head On Straight

Posted in Uncategorized on December 4, 2008 by evershedgolf

The Balance Condition of the Head, the Alignment of the Eye’s, and the Connection to the Brain

I bet the farm that nobody has ever written about this before.

Do you remember those times when you stood over a shot or a putt and you knew before you hit it, it was going to be good? Instead of really recognizing what just happened, we believe we just had a positive thought, and then, poof, a multi-million dollar industry was born. A hand full of smart entrepreneurs start up positive thinking courses, books, tapes, and personal instruction.

The truth: In the moment of those shots, your balance centers all lined up and your brain got the message that all is right in the world to go ahead and pull the trigger.

Now, I fully expect that this will go unheralded, and probably sloughed off by 99% of you. I think I should sell this info to David or Butch and let them put their names on it. Let them make a bunch of money, maybe I should keep a small percentage.

You know what would be really cool – if you hooked yourself up to a heart rate monitor, and you got yourself in a great balance condition one of two things would happen: Either your heart rate would slow down when you’re in great position because you know something good is about to happen, or it would start racing in expectation of a great result.

Comfort Zone

Posted in Uncategorized on December 1, 2008 by evershedgolf

If you’re a 90 shooter and given the physical ability to shoot 70 tomorrow, would you?

Personally, I believe that most of us get used to shooting certain numbers and when we threaten to go lower, something keeps happening that stops us. Few golfers like to admit to the possibility that they got scared and decided to whip one in the trees or quickly three putt a couple of times but no, we would rather blame our swing.

Over the next year, I would really like to take a run at putting a plan together to help those golfers who believe that “comfort zone” might just be a real thing.

For now I can tell you, the more you-know-you-know, the less likely you are to not loose it at the most inopportune times.
